Plant-associated microbial communities play a crucial role for the expression of various plant traits including disease resistance. Increasing evidence suggests that host genotype influences the composition and function of certain microbial key groups, which, in turn, effects how the plant reacts to environmental stresses. Several studies indicate that modern plant breeding may have selected against plant traits essential for hosting and supporting beneficial microbes. However, they also highlight the presence of an exploitable genetic base for the regulation of the rhizosphere microbiota. We illustrate the concept of breeding for microbial symbioses with pea (Pisum sativum L.). Firstly, genotypic variation for the efficiency of a mycorrhizal symbiosis is... |

Introduction In Switzerland, the organic sector has been trying to reduce the massive import of protein crops for feed by encouraging grain legume cultivation during the past years (Clerc et al, 2015). The main limiting factors of low yield stability and high weed pressure were successfully overcome through intercropping of peas and faba beans with barley and oats, respectively. Thus, the production of peas and faba beans grew continuously from 2010 to 2015 from 200t and 90t to 1170t and 560t, respectively (bioaktuell 2017). For more diversification of domestic grain legume cultivation and supply, FiBL has started field trials with blue (Lupinus angustifolius) and white lupins (L. albus) in 2014. The high risk of anthracnose, caused by the fungal agent... |

Introduction and methods Crop mixtures of cereals and legumes have received recent attention in the scope of climate change and local protein supply. Cereal-legume mixtures are known to increase yield and yield stability compared with pure crops. Thus dedicated breeding strategies for mixed cropping might become necessary. As a model crop, we compared 32 current European spring pea (Pisum sativum L.) and 8 current spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars for their yield performance in mixed and pure stands, with pea as the focal species. Trials were done as an incomplete factorial design (Fig. 1) at two locations in Switzerland with two replications (Fig. 2). We calculated variance components for the general and specific mixing ability (GMA and... |

Introduction Mixed cropping, i.e. mixing different crops in the same field, provides agronomic advantages as increased productivity under low inputs conditions (e.g. for organic farming: Bedoussac et al. 2015) and higher yield stability (Raseduzzaman and Jensen 2017). In mixed cropping, choosing the right cultivars is critical for the performance of the mixture, as shown for pea-barley mixtures (Hauggaard-Nielsen and Jensen 2001) and maize-bean mixtures (Hoppe 2016). As performance in pure stand can strongly diverge from performance in mixture, estimating the ability of a cultivar to be mixed with another crop is therefore of utmost importance. For this purpose, concepts of General and Specific Combining Ability in hybrid breeding (Griffing 1956) have... |

Three isolates of different Trichoderma species were selected for this study. T. hamatum (LU592) and T. harzianum (LU686), were known to stimulate growth and improve establishment of P. radiata seedlings, and T. atroviride (LU132) had no stimulatory activity. The ability of these isolates to establish and survive in bulk soil, the rhizosphere, rhizoplane or endorhizosphere of P. radiata seedlings was determined. In addition, the effect of each isolate on P. radiata seedling development and growth was assessed and is currently being confirmed in a large scale commercial experiment. From the nursery experiment, the Trichoderma isolate which was the most effective at colonising all P. radiata root subsystems (LU592) was selected for more detailed ecological... |

The six products, Armicarb, Vitisan, lime sulphur, Caso, Calce Fiocco and Ulmasud were tested for their ability to control downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) on grapevine (Vitis vinifera) in order to find effective alternatives to copper, a heavy metal that is commonly used as a fungicide in organic viticulture. Each product was applied to potted grapevines at i) 40°h (degree hours) and ii) 80°h after inoculation (ai) of the pathogen. These so-called stop-sprays were tested on plants that received two different P. viticola inoculum rates. The formulated potassium bicarbonate product Armicarb and lime sulphur reduced disease incidence and severity similar to or better than the copper hydroxide treatment. Armicarb and lime sulphur reduced disease incidence... |
